As 2024 comes to a close, we’re looking back on a year packed with progress, innovation, and engagement.
It’s been an amazing year for the Innovation & Development team! Initiatives like the Octopus Fan Club and Plots for Kilowatts have gone from strength to strength, and with the onshore wind ban lifted, our development projects are in full swing.
From Fan Club boat trips to buzzing public consultations and VR experiences, we’ve been busy bringing renewable energy closer to communities all across the UK.
Here it is – your 2024 Fan Club x Development Wrapped!
Fan Club
The Octopus Fan Club buzz is unstoppable! This year alone, over 14,000 of you have signed up to say, "We want a Fan Club near us!" That brings our total to a whopping 37,000+ requests—proof that the UK’s love for onshore wind is stronger than ever.
And talk about energy! On just one single day in June, more than 2,000 Fan Club requests rolled in.
On our heat map, you’ll see clusters of support glowing around our Octopus Fan Clubs & hot spots dotted across the UK— we’re on a mission to turn this map pink.

2024 really delivered with Fan Club discounts! Across the year, there were a whopping 337 days when all four of our Fan Clubs unlocked discounts at some level. Leading the pack for reliability was Fan 2, with only 1 day in 2024 where members didn’t bag a discount. Now that’s what we call staying consistent!
When it comes to 20% discount, all our Fans shone, with members enjoying this saving over 50% of the time. Fan 4 (Offshore) led the charge here, delivering 20% off a fantastic 67% of the time. But for the headline act—50% discounts—it’s Fan 1 taking the trophy, with members scoring 50% off a brilliant 25% of the time. There's so much potential for savings across all our Fans, and we’re already excited to see what discount the wind brings next year!
This year, we rolled out the Fan Club’s most requested feature—discount notifications! And wow, did they come through. So far, we’ve sent out over 100,000 push notifications, giving our members a heads-up about potential 50% discount opportunities for that day.
These notifications are a total game-changer, helping members plan their energy use for when it’s greenest and cheapest. Here’s to even more clever energy planning and push notifications in 2025!

Community is at the heart of the Fan Club, and this year we went all out to keep you excited! Over 1000 of you jumped into competitions for the chance to win tickets to the Kaleidoscope Festival at Alexandra Palace and even a boat trip to visit our No.4 Fan (how cool is that?).
Fan Club competitions are always a hit – not only because they're so much fun but also because they help us spread the Fan Club love even further. Here’s to even more competitive fun and fabulous prizes in the year ahead!
Plots for Kilowatts
Plots for Kilowatts is turning land into green power! This initiative invites landowners to host a Fan Club turbine on their land—helping them diversify their income while making a positive (and super green!) impact on their local community.
This year alone, 100+ landowners from across the UK applied, offering up a massive 18,000 acres of land ready to harness the power of the wind.
Since launching, we’ve had over 900 applications, covering an incredible 89,916 acres! And with the onshore wind ban lifted this year (yay!), our development team were super excited to get started on exciting new onshore wind projects.

Onshore Wind Devleopment
Through our Plots for Kilowatts initiative, we’ve selected 5 fantastic sites to kickstart our first wave of onshore wind projects!
Our team has been busy scoping out everything—site access, wind speeds, proximity to homes—making sure we get it just right. But we didn’t stop there. So far, we’ve hosted 5 public consultations (4 new developments & 1 repowering!), bringing the local community into the journey.
And, because we do things the Octopus way, these weren’t your typical consultations. Think immersive virtual reality experiences, heaps of Octopus goodies, and our development experts ready to answer your burning questions. It’s all about making renewable energy not just green, but also fun!
We also kicked off our first repowering project! In Bodmin, Cornwall, we’ve taken on an old onshore wind turbine (a turbowind, to get technical). Right now, it’s not producing much power, and the local community isn’t seeing any real benefits from it—but we’re here to change that. By repowering it, we’re aiming to crank up its performance and make it a win-win for everyone.

Wind speeds of 6.5m/s at 60 meters, 500 meters from any homes, ideally accessible for transport & 94.1% of local residents support the project.

Wind speeds of 6.6m/s at 59m, 750m away from homes, provisional grid connection offer & 76.3% of local residents support the project.
Wind speeds of 6.5 m/s at 59 meters, 500 meters from any homes, feasible grid connection & 57.5% of local residents support the project.
Wind speeds of 6.1 m/s at 60 meters, 500m from any homes or major infrastructure & a public consultation to be held early next year.
Our first repowering project in Bodmin, Cornwall. We recently purchased an onshore wind turbine (a turbowind) for the purpose of repowering.
Generation
It’s not just our development team that’s been hard at work—our No.1 and No.2 Fans have been spinning their socks off, generating both energy and savings for our Fan Club members. Together, they’ve cranked out a massive 2.4 million kWh this year—that’s enough to brew a mind-blowing 144 million cups of tea (milk, no sugar for us, thanks!).
And if that’s not impressive enough, these two powerhouses spun their blades for a collective 16,000 hours last year, delivering discounts with every gust of wind. Here’s to even more savings (and cups of tea) in 2025!
