Plots for Kilowatts

Lease your land to the renewable revolution

Got land to spare? You could earn money and support the UK’s move to clean energy by leasing it to a renewable energy project. Register with Plots for Kilowatts and we’ll see if your land’s a good fit.

What makes a good plot?

It doesn’t matter what you use your land for – as long as you have 15 acres or more, we want to hear from you. Things tend to move faster if the land isn't restricted by tricky access, protected wildlife status, or heritage designations.

What you could earn

The money and potential savings you could earn from hosting a renewable energy project will depend on your land and the project it’s suitable for. Here’s the kind of thing you can expect:

Sheep stood between solar arrays in a field
Annual leasing fee

We’ll pay you an annual fee for leasing your land to the project.

Top-up payments

If the project generates a lot of electricity, you could receive bonus payments.

How it works

We take care of everything – from seeing if your land is suitable, to actually building the project. Generally, the start-to-finish process looks like this:

1. Registration

You’ll fill out our registration form and tell us a bit about your land.

2. Land review

We’ll do some feasibility modeling and look into things like grid connection.

3. Planning permission

If it’s all looking good, we’ll host a public consultation and submit planning permission.

4. Construction

If we get the green light, we’ll order the parts needed for the project and get on the tools!

5. Ongoing maintenance

Once built, we’ll handle all the admin that comes with the project – like keeping it in working order.

FAQs

If you have 15 acres or more, it’s worth registering your land with us. We’ll then assess things like wind speed, sunlight hours, how close your land is to neighbours, and any environmental constraints – like protected wildlife habitats, flood risk, or planning restrictions. You don’t need to have this information ready, just tell us where your land is, and we’ll handle the checks.

If your land is suitable and a project goes ahead, you’ll start earning once it starts sending green energy to the grid. For smaller projects, that can take around a year. Larger ones may take a few years, depending on planning and grid connection.

Registering your land doesn’t commit you to anything. If your land looks suitable, we’ll be in touch to talk through what kind of project might work and what the next steps would be. If you’re happy to go ahead, we’d then offer you a lease agreement that outlines the full terms. You’re free to change your mind at any point before signing.

It will depend on the project and what you’re comfortable with. Wind projects usually involve a lease of 20–30 years, while solar or battery projects can be shorter.
