Chipley Abbey Wind Turbine

We’re developing a single wind turbine in Poslingford, West Suffolk. The turbine is designed to generate up to 1 MW of clean energy, enough to power around 800 homes.

Just Add Wind

Project status

This project is now in planning! You can have your say by adding your comments to our planning application.

What makes this site a good fit?

The site ticks all the right boxes: strong wind speeds (6.6m/s), more than 750m from the nearest homes, and thanks to the local topography, the turbine’s visibility is limited. We’ve also secured a provisional grid connection so we can plug in quickly and efficiently. Most importantly, the community showed overwhelming support at our consultation.

We expect the turbine to have a 59-meter hub height, with blade tips reaching up to 89.5 meters. and it's designed to generate up to 1 MW of clean energy.

Benefits for the community

Beyond the boost in green energy, this project delivers meaningful benefits for people living nearby.

Funding for locals

We plan to offer a £5,000 annual fund for the lifetime of the project and will work with the local community to decide how it’s used.

More for nature

We’ll improve the surrounding area for wildlife, aiming for over 10% biodiversity net gain over what’s there today.

Cheaper energy

Through Fan Club, residents near the turbine could unlock discounted energy rates when the turbine is spinning!

Project timeline

What's been done...

Project kickoff

This project was brought to us in late 2023, through our Plots for Kilowatts initiative. After some site analysis and feasibility modelling, we decided to start developing.

Detailed studies

We then carried out more in-depth assessments - looking at things like the local environment, visual impact, noise, and even shadow flicker. These studies help us understand the full picture and make sure the project works well for both people and place.

Consultation

In November 2024, we hosted a public consultation at Clare Town Hall to hear residents’ thoughts on the project - 78% of people showed support for the project. A huge thank you to everyone who attended and shared their views!

Planning application

We submitted a planning application to West Suffolk Council in June 2025 – this is currently still in planning. You can find all the details of the planning application and add your comments on their website.

Still to come...

Sourcing & construction

Once the planning application hopefully gets the green light, we’ll work to secure the turbine and all the parts we need to carry out the development and begin construction.
